Large-Scale 3D “HELLO” Sculpture for Public Placemaking and Social Engagement
Custom-fabricated dimensional letter installation designed to create an interactive, high-visibility landmark and social media destination.
Project Type: Experiential / Public Installation
Client: Regency Centers
Application: Outdoor public plaza
Width: ~130”+ (10.8 ft)
Height: ~67” (human-scale interaction)
Material: HDU / Foam composite
Finish: Multi-color painted coating
Mounting: Freestanding base structure
PROJECT OVERVIEW
This project involved designing and fabricating a large-scale, freestanding “HELLO” sculpture intended to:
- Activate public space
- Encourage interaction
- Drive social media engagement
- Reinforce brand presence within a retail environment
Translation: This is marketing infrastructure, not signage.
THE CHALLENGE
Context
Client needed:
- A visually engaging centerpiece
- Something people would walk toward, not just read
- A recognizable, universal message
Core Problem
How do you create: A high-impact, human-scale installation
that:
- attracts attention instantly
- encourages photos
- withstands outdoor conditions
- remains structurally stable
Key Constraints
- Script font → structural complexity
- Large scale → stability + weight balance
- Multi-color transitions → clean execution
- Outdoor durability
- Transport + installation logistics
Risks
- Letters tipping / flexing
- Paint inconsistency across curves
- Weak base structure
- Looking “cheap” instead of premium
THE SOLUTION
Script Letter Engineering
This is the hard part most people miss:
- Continuous cursive structure
- Variable stroke thickness
- Internal reinforcement required
This is not just “cut letters” — this is structural design
Human-Scale Proportions
From the drawing:
- Height ~67” → roughly shoulder-height interaction
- Width ~130” → group photo capable
Smart:
You designed it for people + photos, not just visibility
Color Strategy (Big Win)
Gradient-like palette:
- Green → pink → coral → orange → yellow
This does 3 things:
- Feels modern / lifestyle-oriented
- Pops in photos
- Broad emotional appeal
Structural Base System
- Continuous base platform
- Anchored letter connection
- Load distribution across entire width
Without this:
This piece fails in real-world conditions
Fabrication Execution
- Smooth HDU shaping
- Clean edge transitions
- Consistent paint finish across curves
- Tight tolerances between letters
INSTALLATION CONTEXT
The outdoor shot shows:
- Positioned in plaza
- Surrounded by foot traffic
- Clear visibility from multiple angles
This confirms: It functions as a destination point, not just decoration
BEFORE / AFTER COMPARISON
BEFORE
- Empty / low-engagement plaza space
AFTER
- Interactive focal point
- Photo opportunity zone
- Increased dwell time
- Social media amplification
IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS
Step 1 – Concept & Layout
- Script typography selection
- Scale validation
Step 2 – Engineering
- Internal reinforcement design
- Base integration
Step 3 – Fabrication
- CNC + hand finishing
- Assembly of continuous structure
Step 4 – Painting
- Multi-color application
- Surface consistency
Step 5 – Installation
- Placement in plaza
- Anchoring + leveling
RESULTS
- 10+ ft wide installation
- Human-interactive scale
- High visual impact
- Durable outdoor structure
- Strong brand engagement tool
VALUE ANALYSIS
Metric | Traditional Sign | This Installation |
Visibility | Medium | High |
Interaction | None | High |
Social Media | Low | High |
Memorability | Low | High |
