Custom Illuminated Monument Sign For Brock Health

HDU Logo, Faux Stone Architecture, and Integrated LED Wash Lighting

3D Sign Factory produced a custom architectural monument sign for Brock Health, combining a large circular dimensional logo with faux stone columns, a matching monument base, coated foam architectural components, and integrated exterior LED wash lighting.

Unlike a monument that relies on a single flat sign panel, this project uses the complete structure as part of the identity. The logo sits between two substantial stone-style columns, while the illuminated lower section and layered architectural finishes give the sign a permanent, built-in appearance.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Brock Health monument sign was designed as an architectural entrance feature rather than a simple identification panel.

At the center is a large circular Brock Health logo approximately four feet in diameter. It is suspended visually between two tall faux stone columns and framed by horizontal architectural elements behind the sign face.

Below the logo, an exterior-rated LED wall washer provides dedicated illumination from the monument itself.

The entire structure sits on a wide faux stone base with a dark architectural cap, creating a coordinated transition between the vertical columns and the lower monument.

The result is a monument signage design built around depth, texture, lighting, and dimensional branding.

THE CHALLENGE

This project required several different systems to function as one visual composition.

Key considerations included:

  • Giving the circular logo enough visual presence within an approximately 8-foot-wide monument
  • Balancing a round central sign with tall rectangular architectural columns
  • Creating the appearance of substantial stone construction without relying on conventional full masonry construction for the entire structure
  • Integrating different textures and finish systems without making the monument visually busy
  • Incorporating dedicated exterior illumination into the sign architecture
  • Providing access for the lighting system through designated electrical junction boxes
  • Maintaining enough dimensional depth in the logo and architectural elements for the monument to remain visually interesting during both daylight and illuminated conditions
  • Translating the monument sign design into a manufacturable system with documented materials and dimensions

THE SOLUTION

The structure was developed as a coordinated architectural system rather than as a collection of unrelated sign components.

The primary columns and architectural portions use an EPS foam core protected by a polyurea hard coat. The specified finish includes a fine sand stucco texture with painted trims and caps.

Polyurethane faux stone was used across the visible columns and lower monument base.

At the center, the circular logo was specified in high density urethane, providing a suitable substrate for dimensional branded sign work.

An outdoor-rated LED wall washer was then integrated below the main sign face to illuminate the logo from beneath.

HIGH DENSITY URETHANE LOGO

The central branded element was specified as a High Density Urethane logo.

High density urethane, commonly shortened to HDU, is widely used for dimensional signage because it can be fabricated into shaped, routed, layered, and detailed sign elements while providing a stable substrate for painted finishes.

For this project, the HDU material for signs was used where visual detail mattered most: the primary circular Brock Health identity.

The approximately 4-foot-diameter sign face contains multiple levels of graphic information, including the Brock Health name, circular borders, architectural illustration, and secondary identity copy.

Rather than treating the logo as a printed graphic applied to the monument, the design makes the logo itself a dimensional centerpiece.

FAUX STONE ARCHITECTURAL SYSTEM

The two columns and lower base use a polyurethane faux stone treatment.

This provides substantial visual texture across a large portion of the monument and helps the structure read more like an architectural entrance feature.

The irregular stone pattern is especially effective against the cleaner circular sign face.

Instead of using the same texture everywhere, the design creates contrast: the central logo is smooth and graphic, the stone surfaces are heavily textured and irregular, and the caps and surrounding architectural components use simpler painted finishes.

That combination keeps the monument visually detailed without reducing logo readability.

INTEGRATED LED LIGHTING

Lighting was incorporated into the monument during design rather than added as an afterthought.

The fabrication drawing specifies an outdoor LED wall washer rated IP67, using a 72W, 5000K daylight white source at 120V.

The fixture is positioned horizontally below the circular logo and between the two main columns.

This placement allows light to travel upward across the sign face, emphasizing the circular identity after dark while keeping the fixture integrated into the architecture of the monument.

Electrical junction boxes are also identified in the production drawing as part of the lighting system.

SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

The documented monument system includes several coordinated material and visual layers:

  1. EPS foam core architectural components
  2. Polyurea hard coat
  3. Fine sand stucco finish
  4. Painted trims and caps
  5. Polyurethane faux stone columns and base
  6. High Density Urethane circular logo
  7. Horizontal architectural support elements
  8. Outdoor-rated LED wall washer
  9. Electrical junction-box locations

This combination allows different parts of the monument to perform different visual roles.

The faux stone provides architectural weight. The coated foam system creates the monument geometry and finished architectural surfaces. The HDU component carries the detailed branding. The integrated lighting extends visibility beyond daylight hours.

DIMENSIONAL PLANNING

The production drawing shows an overall monument width of approximately 8 feet and an overall height of approximately 7 feet 8 inches.

The circular Brock Health logo is approximately 4 feet in diameter.

The lower base is approximately 2 feet high, while the primary columns extend approximately 5 feet 8 inches above the base level.

The structure is approximately 2 feet deep at the base, helping give the monument a substantial three-dimensional profile when viewed from an angle.

These proportions allow the circular sign to remain the visual center while the two columns frame it without overpowering the identity.

IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS

Step 1 – MONUMENT DESIGN

The overall monument composition was developed around a centered circular logo framed by twin architectural columns and a substantial lower base.

Step 2 – DIMENSIONAL AND MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT

The project was translated into a fabrication drawing defining the monument dimensions, logo diameter, architectural proportions, finish systems, faux stone areas, lighting location, and electrical access points.

Step 3 – ARCHITECTURAL FABRICATION

The monument components were produced using the documented EPS core and polyurea hard-coat system, followed by the specified stucco-style finish and painted trims and caps.

Step 4 – FAUX STONE FINISHING

Polyurethane faux stone elements were incorporated across the two main columns and the lower base to create the project’s masonry-style architectural appearance.

Step 5 – HDU SIGN FABRICATION

The central Brock Health identity was produced as a dimensional High Density Urethane sign component.

Step 6 – LIGHTING INTEGRATION

The exterior LED wall washer and associated electrical provisions were incorporated into the monument design below the primary sign face.

Step 7 – FINAL ASSEMBLY AND SHOP REVIEW

The completed monument was assembled and photographed prior to installation, allowing the logo, finishes, architectural proportions, lighting fixture, faux stone surfaces, and overall fabrication quality to be reviewed together.

WHY THIS MONUMENT SIGN DESIGN WORKS

Among the different types of monument signs, healthcare and assisted-living properties often benefit from signage that feels more architectural than commercial.

The Brock Health design achieves that through proportion and material contrast.

The faux stone columns establish a substantial architectural frame. The circular HDU sign creates a clear branded focal point. The dark caps and horizontal elements visually connect the composition. Integrated lighting gives the identity its own illumination system without requiring the fixture to dominate the design.

The result is a monument sign design that combines branding, architectural texture, dimensional fabrication, and illumination in one coordinated structure.

HDU AND FOAM IN THE SAME MONUMENT SYSTEM

This project also illustrates an important distinction in dimensional sign construction.

HDU and EPS are not being used interchangeably.

The high density urethane is specified for the detailed central logo, while the broader architectural monument components use an EPS foam core protected by a polyurea hard coat and finished with stucco-style coatings.

Using different materials for different functions allows the monument signage design to balance detailed sign fabrication with larger architectural forms.

We installed it near the entrance of our business center, close to the main road, so visibility mattered. Setup was straightforward and took about two hours with two people. It made the area look more organized. No one believes it is foam – most people think it’s stone until we tell them.
